Abstract:
In modern linguistics, the study of linguo-personological aspects of self-presentation in the virtual space is a high priority area. Since social media (networks, chats, and forums) have become not only a global tool for communication but also a tool for the formation, transfer, and transformation of certain images, opinions, and stereotypes, describing the specifics of a linguistic personality’s self-presentation and behavior in these contexts has become especially relevant. The authors have examined 240 messages from thematic communities addressed to the female part of the audience of the English-language site Reddit, which combines the fea-tures of a social network and a forum. The aim of the study is to describe the ways of constructing a virtual feminine identity and its actualization in terms of both content and language (its graphic-phonetic, lexical, and syntactic levels). The construction of the virtual feminine identity on the English-language site Reddit was considered from two positions: extralinguistic (avatar and nickname) and linguistic (textual content of the user’s profile). The authors demonstrate that, in the process of constructing a virtual feminine identity, the real identity of a social media user is subjected to transformations by incorporating in its language some features of a masculine and androgynous linguistic personality, namely: intensification of positive assessments, high emotiveness and expressiveness of speech, a strategy of communicative cooperation and support, as well as “non-stereotypical” language means, such as the use of obscene vocabulary and gender-neutral ways to address the audience of the Internet community.
