Abstract:

It has been known for a long time that at the turn of the 20–21centuries fiction lost its normative function, passing this role onto popular media. In the 21st century, this process has only deepened. Modern media discourse clearly demonstrates the high adaptability of the grammatical system of the language in appropriating new conceptual content. The all-important modern idea of tolerance has spread even to the area of the strictest grammatical standards, leading to signs of “elastic”, “recommendatory” (and not rigid) normativity. For a number of reasons — including that of literature itself being replaced, in the words of writer Yuri Polyakov, by PIPs, personalized publishing projects — it’s no longer fiction but the media that now influences the formation of normativity. The purpose of the article is to trace grammatical changes introduced by the media and to determine the reasons and conditions for correcting the grammatical standard in the context of ecological linguistics. Our analysis of the media discourse clearly demonstrates the general direction of the changes in the grammatical system, expressed, in particular, in the ratio of analyticism and inflectivity. We used the method of pragmatic interpretation of non-trivial grammatical forms used in modern media, analyzing grammatical transformations in the media based on the theses about the dialectical unity of form and content and about contradiction being the main motivation for any development in the conceptual arsenal of modern ecological linguistics. Textual expansion of paradigm boundaries in the media is largely achieved by the elimination of lacunae, and many grammatical changes follow social transformations, including, for instance, the current widespread use of feminitives in the media. The inflectional category of number and the word-forming gender forms in nouns seem to be strengthening their grammatical regularity; graduality in nouns as well as verbal transitivity also seem to be increasing. This process demonstrates the creative essence of grammar and corresponds to ecological thinking, which is responsible for preserving the diversity of expression while keeping the parameters of semantic accuracy and pragmatic relevance.
