Methods and Techniques of Translating Psychological Terms (Based on D. Carnegie’s ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’)

Abstract:

This study, carried out at the intersection of two areas of modern linguistics, functional stylistics and theory of translation, focuses on describing the methods and techniques of conveying psychological terms in translation. It has been established that, in this case, the choice of methods and techniques of translation must be determined by the peculiarities of the style and language of popular science literature, aimed at attracting a wide readership. A popular science text is a combination of diametrically opposed characteristics: a strict logic of presenting the material is combined with a light-toned and emotionally engaging way of conveying in-formation, created through the use of a variety of speech techniques (incentive sentences, rhetorical questions) and expressive language means. The general style, aimed at attracting a wide readership, requires simplicity of presentation and minimal use of highly specialized terms, which, as a rule, are accompanied by explanations and in translation are typically conveyed by equivalents in the target language. In the genre of popular psychology, mainly general scientific terms are used, since such texts primarily cater to readers without special knowledge of psychology. Thus the choice of methods and means of translation in such cases is also dictated by the need to preserve the pragmatics of the original.
