Abstract:

The paper features the results of the analysis of English phraseological units that represent the emotional-volitional sphere and include motion verbs. The study seeks to identify specific features of conceptualizing emotion in terms of motion events and to determine the nature of interaction between motion and the emotional-volitional sphere. The relevance of this research is determined by the contemporary interest in conceptualization of reality, as in modern linguistics the study of conceptualization conveyed through language is one of the most vibrant research areas. In addition, the study of motion semantics and the interaction of naïve kinematics with other conceptual spheres constitute another relevant research issue. The research methodology includes definition analysis, component analysis, the interpretive method, and the method of cognitive modeling. The findings reveal mechanisms that contribute to understanding of emotions and show specific correlation between the two conceptualized spheres under analysis. The theoretical significance of the research lies in its contribution to the development of emotion studies and in broadening our understanding of motion semantics. Its findings can be utilized as a theoretical framework for other humanitarian disciplines and used for verification of various emotion theories. The practical significance of the research stems from the possibility of implementing its results into courses in phraseology, cultural and cognitive linguistics, as well as other humanitarian disciplines.
