Abstract:
The modern conflict between supporters of Western influence on all spheres of life and culture (including the Russian linguoculture) and opponents of such influence plays a diagnostic role, since it cumulates in itself a certain socio-cultural state, the study of which is significant for general characterization of social life. The conflict reflects objective contradictions in society, and the value conflict, implying a confrontation between these conflicting points of view, is a noticeable attribute of social life. Disputes about the use of borrowings and their status in the Russian language system have intensified after the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions and especially with the beginning of the special military operation to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. Scientific literature and media actively discuss the problems of “import substitution” not only in the economy but also in the Russian culture and the Russian language. Unrestrained borrowing (mainly from English), which was characteristic until recently, contradicts the ideas about the optimal development of the national linguistic culture. The purpose of the article is to analyze the essence of the value conflict based on different ideas about the extent of using foreign language elements in modern communication. The article examines publications of popular modern media (mainly published in 2022) seeking to investigate the verbalization of this value conflict associated with the problem of foreign cultural borrowings, using cognitive and linguopragmatic analysis and the axiological method within a broad sociolinguistic context. The degree of penetration of foreign-language material today is such that conclusions about benefits or harm of borrowing in general are hardly justified: it might be more helpful to talk about benefits (or lack thereof) of specific lexemes, grammatical forms, or even individual letters of alphabet. New circumstances (sanctions, departure of many foreign companies from Russia, etc.) will also contribute to the linguistic “import substitution,” which should not be understood as a global rejection of everything foreign, but as a more balanced, functionally reasonable use of these resources.
