Abstract:

Modern studies of communicative behavior and value orientations of typical representatives of different societies bring to the fore the term “linguocultural personality type,” i.e. the concept of a typified personality, which, in a concentrated form, represents behaviors and values significant for specific linguocultural communities. The aim of the study is to explore the strategy and tactics of communicative behavior of the linguocultural personality type “geisha” in typical communicative situations as well as the language means used in speech by this linguocultural type. From the point of view of methodology, the linguocultural type “geisha” is considered as a communicative linguocultural personality type, i. e. when studying it, the communicative side of the linguocultural type is emphasized. The research methods utilized in this study include the method of conceptual analysis, the algorithm for studying the linguocultural personality type, the descriptive method, the speech portrait method, the method of contextual analysis, the semantic-definitional method, the method of stylistic interpretation, the method of analyzing linguocultural scripts, and the method of communicative-pragmatic analysis. According to the results of the study, the communicative aspect of verbal behavior of the linguocultural personality type “geisha” is characterized by the strategy of cooperation through the communicative tactics of courtesy, showing interest, polite disagreement, changing the topic, direct answer, emphasizing significance, positive assessment, as well as tactics of encouraging action, praise, patronage, mentoring, support, sharing the experience. A geisha’s speech is distinguished by grammatical correctness and rich emotional and semantic content; it contains polite speech etiquette formulas expressing respect, agreement, disagreement or apology and is characterized by the use of common vocabulary, professional vocabulary, simple or non-expanded compound sentences, as well as complex-structured statements. The figurativeness and expressiveness of a geisha’s speech is achieved through the use of stylistic devices (parcellations, truncated constructions, anaphoric repetition, unfinished phrases, personification, metaphors and metaphorical epithets). The theoretical significance of the study lies its attempt to define the linguistic factors that shape the communicative behavior of a typified geisha. The practical significance of the study lies in that its results can be used in teaching university courses in sociolinguistics, linguoconceptology, linguopersonology, linguoculturology, stylistics, lexicology, and phraseology of the English language.
