Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to study the role of deixis in a translator’s interpretation of a literary text; more specifically, the study examines the deictic units in G. D’Annunzio’s poem “La pioggia nel pineto.” The problem of interpreting the semantics of deictic units is relevant since it is associated with the complex issue of interpreting such units in a literary text. The translation of deictic units constitutes both a practical and theoretical challenge for the translator. The theoretical problem is primarily related to addressing two aspects of meaning and reference in the field of personal, spatial, and temporal deixis; the practical one соncerns specific translation solutions. The article presents the author’s full Russian translation of G. D’Annunzios’s poem “La pioggia nel pineto” made in collaboration with G. Belussi. Using primarily the descriptive method and the method of contextual analysis, the author provides a comparative analysis of her translation with how other translators interpreted the poem, drawing attention to the way the reference values of deictic units change in non-canonical communication.
