Abstract:

The paper discusses the place post-editing occupies in the translation production process, approaches to performing post-editing activity, requirements to the post-editor professional personality, and the principles and methods of forming the post-editor’s professional personality in teaching post-editing on the basis of the communicative-functional approach to translation. The authors argue that post-editing is not a separate stage in the translation production process; it is an activity integrated into the activities of all actors in the process, including the post-editor. The article offers a new concept: the professional post-editor’s mindset which implies the post-editor’s ability to take into account the purpose of the final translation product from the client’s point of view, and thus to determine the neces-sary depth of post-editing correlated with the level of quality required by the client. Formation of the professional post-editor’s mindset is based on the professional translator’s mindset. Accordingly, teaching post-editing follows teaching translation and is based on the competences that have been already acquired by students. The main principles of forming post-editor’s competences include using the communicative-functional approach and taking into account the realities of post-editing as well as recommendations of ISO international standards. The article also discusses some methods that can be applied in teaching various types of post-editing.
