(topic “Variation system as a structurally significant aspect of natural language”) (FSWZ-2024-0001)

The article analyzes the role of social knowledge in the formation of linguistic variations. The mate-rial under consideration is the system of the modern German language, which is characterized by one of the most diverse sets of variant forms within the Indo-European language family. Unlike the tra-ditional approach to systematizing language forms, which is based on regional, social, and situational sources of variation, the socio-cognitive consideration of linguistic variationism is becoming a relevant direction in linguistics. By incorporating cognitive mechanisms into the field of linguistics, the focus shifts to the processes of interaction between socio-cognitive knowledge and the formation of variant language forms. The applied aspect of the study lies in examining specific socially marked forms of the language’s existence, taking into account individual cognitive dominants of their variability, which makes it possible to identify variational linguistics as a distinct field within language studies. The aim of the article is to analyze theoretical principles, linguistic terms, and existing language forms that convey social meanings. It explores the modeling of social knowledge about language and the formation of a socio-cognitive approach to the study of regional language forms. The use of regional languages (dialects / vernaculars / patois) as a foundation for further analysis yields a fresh perspective on the system of language forms, which at the moment boasts the richest history of scholarship.
