Author’s name:

Olga Lukmanova

Abstract:

The article examines the poetics of hip hop and rap in Hamilton, “an American musical” by Lin Manuel Miranda. It demonstrates the unique appropriateness of the genre for the plot and the heroic-romantic pathos of the story as well as the intimate genetic connection of hip hop to America’s national self-narrative, partially explaining the powerful social and cultural impact the musical has had on the US culture and self-perception over the last several years. The article focuses on the “three pillars” of hip hop: rhythm, rhyme, and wordplay, their types and functions in “Hamilton”.
