MOTIVATION OF LEXICAL UNITS: CLARIFYING THE CONCEPT

Abstract:

Motivation as a language phenomenon when defined broadly means verbal representation of one or more characteristic features of an object in its name. The paper seeks to establish a linguistically valid definition of motivation as inherent in lexical derivation processes, and in particular in terminological derivation. It is assumed that motivationally bound lexical derivation is not confined to morphological word-building processes alone but also includes semantic derivation: development of meaning and transference of meaning.
