Abstract:
The article analyzes the existing Russian translation of Die Vermessung der Welt by D. Kelman, one of the most outstanding German novels of the globalization era. The novel is a sample of the traditional biography novel which tells about the lives of two German science geniuses: I. K. F. Gauss (1777–1855) and A. von Humboldt (1769–1859). In the Russian translation, several points merit special attention, namely the interpretation of specific vocabulary and terms, historical and national features, titles, and indirect dialogs whose representation is different in German and Russian. The article examines the author’s mistakes in describing actuality and historical truth and addresses the rights and obligations of the translator in encountering such mistakes as well as possible ways of dealing with them.
