Abstract:

The paper approaches the problem of assessing quality of translation as an intellectual activity based on a decision-making process. Theoretical controversy of the issue and practical assessment results are historically accounted for by paradigm shifts which, more often than not, lead to introduction of alternative “rules of translation”. The current paradigm involves a complex interaction of objective and subjective factors which determine the content and character of assessment decisions and, therefore, presents a promising research area. The current focus on the process of assessing the quality of translation rather than its result requires bringing into consideration such parameters as goals, motives, and the environment of the assessment process. The central element in the presented model of translation quality assessment is the assessment actor: the person responsible for decision making. Special attention is given to the assessment actor’s particular area of professional activity which certainly plays a role in defining assessment goals and choosing a particular set of tools (criteria, parameters, and procedures) and thus determines the assessment result.
